As you may know, I recently !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for $1000. It was an as-is deal. So to get it on the road along with supplies and extras, it cost me as follows:

$1000 car purchase in cash

About $1100 for safety certification fee , new front pads, front rotors, service rear drums, new alternator belt and pulley

About $160 for a bulk pack of 8 Wix oil filters, 2 engine air filters, 3 bottles of synthetic transmission fluid, 4 iridium spark plugs

$40 for gas

$122 for the first month of insurance

$437 for the used vehicle package, tax on ownership transfer, temp permit and registration fee to have it register to 2020.

So altogether, my $1000 car has cost me around $2850 so far.

It’s amazing how things can add up even on a cheap car.

One of my friends had a FWD Aerio. It was so noisy inside. Most of it was engine noise. Other than that it was a decent car until she wrecked it.

Well it depends what car you’re coming out of.

Compared to the 2005 Focus Wagon (with non-OEM rubber engine mounts instead of the OEM hydraulic engine mounts installed)? It’s a bit quieter.

But compared to the 2014 VW Beetle that I rented? It’s notice ably noisier... and the noise isn’t nearly as nice as the much quieter noise the 20V 2.5L 5 cylinder the Beetle had.

Our SX4 was noisy too, but not quite as much. But t he droning of the Aerio’s engine was a little too much for me.

So far so good. This car doesn’t have power locks, but it does have power windows.

The Focus I had came with manual windows but power locks.

So with this car, I like the power windows and miss the power locks.

Also when locking the door, it has a feature that stops you from accidentally locking the keys in the car. If you just press the button to lock it and close, it won’t lock. You have to press down the lock button, hold the outside door handle in the open position as you close it.

A Toyota Tercel my brother had in the 1980s had the same feature.

Also, while the Focus was noisier (particularly when cold), the noises the Mazda-based engine made were a little nicer and it felt more willing to rev.

Oh and I got a 2nd key made at Canadian Tire... but it’s so stiff in the lock it’s practically unusable . I tried grinding it down where i thought it needed it, but that just made the key not work at all. Not a big deal as this car has a non-chip key. So a replacement key is only $5. I’ll have to go somewhere else to get them to make a replacement key.

Of course not having a chip key also means my car is theoretically easier to steal.

And I’m still getting used to the driving position which is higher than in the Focus. It doesn’t feel bad, just different. The seats are definitely more comfortable and my son thinks it has better ergonomics because the arm rest on the door actually lines up to where his arm is, unlike on the Focus.

And unlike the Focus, it always starts on the first try even the starter sounds slower. And there are no creaking/groaning sounds as I back the car out off the driveway and onto the street like there was on the Focus.

The Focus had a lot of rust at the time of death.

I find it’s reasonably quiet at legal cruising speeds. But if you’re gonna go over 120km/h, yeah, it gets noisy... and the noise isn’t that great.

That’s an interesting lock feature, though I think I would find it a bit annoying! :)

So that lock feature kinda designed to make you use the key to lock the door?
